Disney Sponsors World Maker Faire New York 2013

At Disney, we believe if you can dream it, you can do it.

This weekend, Disney continues its sponsorship of the World Maker Faire New York, which lets thousands of attendees roll up their sleeves and see where DIY ingenuity will take them.

The annual event, also known as the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, offers Faire-goers opportunities to get practical experience and kick start their own maker skills, all with Disney’s help. From special workshops to maker exhibits, everyone can hear and learn from experts in several industries, including science and technology.

We recently sat down with Sherry Huss, vice president, Maker Media, to find out what makesthe World Maker Faire New York such a highly anticipated and inspirational event.

This event has become an anticipated experience for people from all over the world. What makes it so special?
Maker Faire is a festival that celebrates creativity, making and so much more. Not only do attendees get to participate in creating the future, they get to meet amazing makers, see extraordinary things and get hands on and engage in a variety of activities, such as testing out a 3D printer and designing a hydroponic window garden. This year we expect to have more than 70,000 Faire goers over the course of the weekend, engaging with 650-plus makers who will be exhibiting their amazing projects.

Science and creativity go hand in hand. How does the Faire encourage and embrace those themes?
Too often, science and creativity are treated as separate activities and not brought together. Not so at Maker Faire! Maker Faire embraces both aptitudes and enables a passionate community to come together to explore, be curious, mix mediums and disciplines and try new things. Sometimes the outcomes may result in failure, or possibly take a new shape or direction, but the process and the sharing of the finished pieces is what really brings together the maker community.

What does Disney’s support represent for the World Maker Faire?
The Maker Movement impacts industry, innovation and education, and involves almost everyone. Disney’s support of World Maker Faire reinforces the importance of innovation and resourcefulness, and helps us bring the best of creativity to thousands of kids and families. Together we hope this showcase will inspire the next generation of young makers.
